The 3rd Annual Verizon Cup kicks off today at the American Memorial Park tennis courts with games in the men’s 4.0 and men’s 3.5 divisions ushering the action.

Breaking the ice and getting the honor of playing the first game of this year’s tournament are the doubles pairs of Ruben Leynes and Roy Banados and Alfredo Quiroz and Boy Cruz in the men’s 3.5 category. They will see action beginning at 6pm.

Two games are set for 7:30pm. The men’s 3.5 match would have Brett Nelson and Randy Steele taking on Ruben Reyes and Lito Santos, while longtime partners Jorge Olanda and Edwin Maratas take to the court against Gary Ramsey and Richard “Doc” Brostrom in the men’s 4.0.

A couple of more men’s 4.0 matches are scheduled for 9pm, beginning with the duel between Father Ryan Jimenez and Renato “Dodong” Espanola and Didith Julve and Chuck Sayon. The other match pits Ricky Castro and Bobby Nato against Toshi Beltau and Abet Encarnacion.

While doubles play kicks off today, singles and mixed doubles will not start until Aug. 11. Players thinking of seeing action in the singles and mixed doubles have until Aug. 5 to make up their minds and sign up.

The award ceremony and end-of-tournament banquet would be held on the last day of the two-week and three-day long event on Aug. 20 at the AMP grounds.
