Airport operations went back to normal yesterday, after several days of disruption due to haze created by the volcanic ash coming from Anatahan.

Saipan airport manager Stanley C. Torres said all airlines operated flights according to schedule yesterday.

Guam-bound passengers, who were stranded Wednesday as a result of a mechanical problem suffered by a Continental Micronesia aircraft, were able to leave that night, Torres added.

Torres reported that Continental had to use another plane to fly the passengers Wednesday night. The troubled aircraft was still being serviced as of yesterday afternoon.

“The flights went back in operation after [Wednesday] night. Everything is running smoothly,” said Torres.

The Continental aircraft’s engine trouble occurred as Saipan, Tinian and Rota remained under volcanic haze advisory. The Emergency Management Office had yet to lift the advisory for the three islands at presstime.

An earlier report stated that the aircraft left the Saipan International Airport at approximately 6pm Wednesday. At about 6:15pm, the ports police received a call that the aircraft was coming back due to “problems with its left engine.”

The plane made a safe emergency landing. Nobody was reported injured during the incident.

The haze over Saipan has resulted in flight interruptions since Monday, temporarily stranding hundreds of passengers.
