Registration opens for annual Teachers Institute
The NMI Council for the Humanities has announced the opening of registration for the 2005 Teachers Institute.
The Institute comprises six eight-hour sessions to be held on consecutive Saturdays from Aug. 27 to Oct. 1. It is intended to provide teachers with a thorough overview of the history of the Northern Mariana Islands from ancient times to present. Sessions will feature presentations by recognized experts in the various areas of local history.
Presenters include: Dr. Brian Butler, Ancient History and Archaeology; Fr. Francis X. Hezel and James Vincent, Spanish Period; Lino Olopai, Carolinian Settlement; Dr. Dirk Spennemann, German Period; Kayoko Kushima, Japanese Period; Don Farrell, World War II, Samuel McPhetres, Naval and Trust Territory Periods; Howard Willens, Covenant Negotiations and Commonwealth Period.
The Institute is open to K-12 teachers in both public and private schools on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian. The registration fee is $75 and covers reading materials, PowerPoint presentations, and a completion certificate.
Registration is limited to 30 teachers on Saipan and 10 teachers each on Rota and Tinian. Space is limited and teachers will be registered on a first come, first served basis. Registration will close at 4:30pm on Aug. 23, 2005.
