In the midst of a hot and humid day on Aug. 19, 2005, two young Northern Marianas soldiers reached a milestone in their lives as they took part in the graduation of over 1,200 personnel from U.S. military basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina.

Pvt. Roland Igisomar, a reservist recruited out of Portland, Oregon and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rafael Fitial of Chalan Kanoa, completed his basic training, along with Pvt. Sarina Cangco, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Miguel T. Cancgo of Tanapag.

The day after the ceremony, Igisomar departed for Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, for Advanced Individual Training in the field of Equipment Mechanics.

“My passion for that particular work started from observing my dad working on heavy equipment back home. After I serve out my service in the U.S. military, I’d like to carry on in the field so dearly enjoyed by my dad. I know I will enjoy it as well,” said Igisomar.

Cangco departed for Ft. Lee, Virginia for her AIT to become a Quarter Master. It is at this base where Cangco will be equipped with the knowledge to take responsibility for all U.S. military equipment, from carriers and airplanes, to tanks and uniforms, among others.

“I did not have any specific choice when I came in. But when I learned of the field that I am going into, I am really looking forward to starting right away. I will give it all I can and I will excel,” a determined Cangco said.

Attending on behalf of Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio was staffer Emeterio L. Saures.

“They’ve proven what it takes to join the ranks of the U.S. Army. It was not an easy task for them as a lot of demands were placed on them, but as they now leave their training camp, they are not only in possession of the knowledge, the skills and the qualities to fulfill their military mission, but most importantly, they fully understand and have accepted their role of being a soldier. I am proud of them and I wish them the best of luck in their military careers,” said Tenorio. (PR)
