The Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association postponed its scheduled monthly meeting for September Thursday evening.

According to Division of Sports and Recreation staff, the meeting was postponed due to usage of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium as a shelter for individuals who homes were damaged by Typhoon Nabi.

A note posted on the Ada gym conference room door indicated that the meeting was postponed until further notice.

NMASA holds a monthly meeting that includes representatives of each sport at 6:30pm on the first Thursday of each month.

Among the issues to be discussed during the postponed meeting was the selection of the August Male and Female Athletes of the Month, as well as preparations for upcoming events such as the 2006 Micronesian Games, which will probably be hosted by the CNMI, and the 2007 South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.

Last month, NMASA recognized all medalists representing the CNMI in the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games as July Athletes of the Month, and also recognized all CNMI athletes at the Games as honorable mention.

Medalists include swimmers Nina Mosley, Amanda Johnson, Myana Welch, Minerva Cabrera, Nicole Calvo, Dave Palacios, Juan Camacho, Michael Camacho, Rezne Wong, and Melissa Coleman, who medalled as a swimmer and a triathlete. Other medalists include triathletes Stephan Samoyloff, Dirk Sharer, Anneka Sakovich, Ketson Kabiriel, and Natasha Good; wrestler Joe Ocampo; and table tennis players Budhi Gurung, Su Yong dong, Chen Yin Ling, and Steve Lim.

At the end of each year, NMASA will have the tough task of deciding who among all athletes of the month for the entire year will be recognized as Male and Female Athlete of the Year. Awards and a year’s worth of bragging rights are also given to the Male and Female Student Athletes of the Year.
