Tinian’s own takes Perpetual Cup
For the first time in the tour-nament’s three year history, Tinian resident Frank Diaz of the Department of Commerce secured the 3rd Annual Tinian Mayor’s Perpetual Cup on Saturday morning at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort by edging out 62 a field of fellow strikers and slicers.
The Cup will finally return to Tinian.
Despite the recent weather woes brought on by the near miss of Typhoon Nabi, the skies cleared to allow Diaz to bag the Double Peoria Low Net tournament to edge second place finisher Mark Moss and Eddie Peter in third.
Aside from the first place trophy, Diaz gladly accepted $500 in cash for the low net, while Moss walked away with $400, Peter pocketed $300, and Frank Castro and Tony Satur each took home $100 for placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Though he took third overall, Peter had a couple of other reasons to celebrate as two of his shots earned him a total of $200 in the Closest–to-the-Pin competition. A prize of $100 awaited any duffer whose ball landed nearest to each of the Hole-in-One opportunities worth $10,000. Peter wasn’t the only one with cause to smile as Ben Jones and Dan Ganacia also earned a c-mote for their iron work.
The round of golf on Saipan’s southernmost course with a view of Tinian’s shores was followed by an awards banquet hosted by the Tinian Mayor’s Office at the Coral Ocean Point Resort pool area, as the participants traded stories of their day on the fairways and in the rough.
Not lost among the actual gamesmanship between the golfers was the sense of charity and goodwill as all proceeds of this event go to Kids, Arts and Programs (KAP), a non-profit organization in conjunction with the Tinian Youth Center. The funds raised will allow the some of the much needed repairs to the main office of the Youth Center headquarters in San Jose. The next goal of the organization is to purchase a vehicle to bring the activities to the kids and vice versa.
Organizers wish to thank all of the participants of the tournament and the Tinian Mayor’s Office, Miller Light, Mariana Visitors Authority, FPA Pacific Corporation, Myung Dong, Empress Tours, Tinian Ice & Water, Elite Printing and Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort for making the event possible.
