Black Magic impressive as Rocball preseason begins
The World Organized Rocball High School League kicked off preseason play Wednesday afternoon, with Black Magic mustering just enough juice to slip past the Lagoonerz at Marianas High School.
The Lagoonerz came out strong and swung favor to their corner with an 18-11 victory in the opening set, however, Black Magic managed to find an answer in the second set and scored a 17-9 victory to turn the tables and leave with the nail-biting 29-27 victory.
Rocball creator and league organizer James Feger said no detailed statistics were recorded because the league is still in its preseason stage.
“The practice rounds are for the teams to practice and we have some new players, so this is their opportunity to learn about the game and understand it before the season starts,” he said.
Feger also disclosed that Black Magic’s Dior Jones, who played a big role in leading SKN to last season’s championship series, scored the season’s first goal.
In all, the game also featured three aces and six kees.
Other members of Black Magic include Julius Saito, Typhoon Saito, Dean Matthew, Frank Suda, John James Malite, and Molins Episom.
Members of the Lagoonerz are Graceful Fiden, Danny David, Gary Phillip, Tito Francisco, Danny Fiden, and Termy Norech.
Aside from Black Magic and Lagoonerz, the league also features defending champion Mwaliyas, Chura, and Caropino.
Mwaliyas defeated SKN in last season’s championship series and is expected to be a force to be reckoned with again as the Feger said team will sport returnees such as playoffs most valuable player Pedro Iguel and Darrel Roligat. The team roster, as well as the complete roster for Chura, was not available.
Meanwhile, making up Caropino are Vince Teregeyo, Joemar Tumaquip, Don Camacho, James Sablan, Jose Castro, Ricardo Basilla, Nate Mateo, and Matt Iguel.
Feger, who created the sport in 1979, said he will give teams a couple more weeks to practice and expects the regular season to begin by the end of the month.
He said interested teams can still register to play.
