Four years after 9/11: How has the terror attacks impacted you? Do you feel safer these days? Have we made any strides at all in the fight against terrorism?

Things are looking good now. The 9/11 attacks was something that we cannot forget. We can always be attacked but we won’t let them. We will not wait. The tragedy has made us more patriotic.

I guess as an individual, I am not safe. Everybody in the world is not safe too since that attack happened. What happened then shook the whole world. Terrorism will not go anywhere, but if an incident like that would happen in the CNMI, we can never really tell.

I believe the United States population should wake up to the fact that the U.S. could be hit by any foreign country. It might have awakened some people since it happened. I don’t want to discuss politics here but I believe we have made a little stride in the fight against terrorism.

The biggest impact is a wake up call for all of us. We should start thinking about our security in general. It made me more guarded all the time, because we are never secure. We should always be on the lookout here. The attack reopened my mind and it made me totally aware and on the lookout when something is not normal since I have a background in the military. So when something is not normal anymore—whether big or small—we should tell the authorities. The tragedy did not change my life but it taught me to be a little more patient and to be safe all the time.

I have a very close buddy whose sister died in the tragedy and it had affected me that way. It’s been four years and I believe air travel is still not safe, you know how easy it was before. It has huge impact in my life but I feel secure enough in Saipan. Traveling in Muslim countries has changed tremendously. The result of the war on terror by the U.S. caused some rift between developing countries and the religious countries. Traveling to Bali has also been impacted as their treatment to Americans has changed.

Before I felt a little safer, but when Verizon went down and we were unable to access 911 hotline numbers it made me worry once again. That incident only showed us how vulnerable we are to such breakdowns or any terror attack for that matter.

-Christie Halloren
San Jose

The attack has made me realize to focus on my future, that’s why when it happened I made an investment in real estate. When the tragedy happened the real estate industry in Hawaii went down.

Ever since the tragedy happened it made me realize to appreciate my family and loved ones more. I make it a point that every moment I spend with them is worthwhile and that I tell them how much I appreciate them and how much I love them all.

-Adam Cafege
San Roque

I don’t feel safe right now despite the many stringent security rules. We never know when the terrorist can come here in the CNMI. We may be on our own now but we are under the U.S. We are U.S. citizens so we are worried about our security too. The impact of the tragedy has affected the economy worldwide.
