The Attorney General’s Office has charged a Finance Department employee with theft at the Superior Court for allegedly stealing approximately $3,000 from the CNMI government.

In criminal information filed with the court sometime last week, CNMI chief prosecutor Jeffrey Moots accused 45-year-old Genoveva DLG. Lee of unlawfully pocketing CNMI money from May to August earlier this year.

Besides charging Lee with theft, the criminal information enumerated no other criminal count against the defendant. The Division of Customs Services earlier charged Lee with theft, theft of service and misconduct in public office.

Lawmen had arrested Lee for allegedly stealing excise tax collections amounting at least $10,800 to pay bills and buy illegal drugs.

In an affidavit submitted to the court, Customs Agent Task Force officer Frank S. Quitugua said Lee was assigned to work at the Customs Chalan Kanoa Post Office. Part of her duties was to inspect mail and collect excise taxes, Quitugua said.

Customs officials discovered that some $10,800 has been missing, prompting its officials to conduct an internal investigation.

Lee allegedly admitted taking small amounts of $10 and $20 bills from the cash box. Since May, she admitted to have taken a total of over $3,000, but not $10,800.
