Rota sees 5K visitors in weekend fiesta

Rota is expecting to host up to 5,000 visitors this weekend for the 2005 Bisita Luta, which is part of the annual San Francisco De Borja Fiesta celebrations.

Martin T. Mendiola, Bisita Luta publication committee chair, said yesterday that extra flights will be made to accommodate guests.

“We’ve received assurances that Cape Air will be making extra flights to bring in the guests. We’re inviting everybody to come and join us and celebrate the fiesta with us this weekend,” said Mendiola.

Several activities are lined up for the annual event. These include the 3rd Annual Kantan Isla Concert which features local artists.

The fiesta event also features Battle of the Bands 2005, which offers a grand prize of $3,000. The band competition, which is set on Oct. 8, on Rota will award $500 for the third place, $1,000 for the second place, and $2,000 for the first place winner.

Other highlights include the annual Fishing Derby, which aims to attract fishing aficionado from Guam, Saipan, and Tinian.

Mendiola said Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente is expected to sail to Rota to participate in the derby.

The fishing competition is held on Oct. 6 and 7.

On Saturday, several other activities will be held, including a half marathon in the morning.

At night, the coronation of Bisita Luta queen will be held as well as the annual dinner fiesta gathering.

These events will be held at the Chamorro Village.

From Monday to Thursday, Rota is holding its Coconut Tree Arts festival, which is similar to the Flame Tree Arts Festival on Saipan.

Bisita Luta was initiated by incumbent Rota Mayor Benjamin Manglona over seven years ago.
