October is Humanities Month
The NMI Humanities Council has declared October as CNMI Humanities Month to help community members better understand their history, culture, and language.
The proclamation was held at the Governor’s Office Friday and Gov. Juan N. Babauta led the event, with Humanities Council officers Herman T. Guerrero, Paz Younis, and Ron Bareneau in attendance.
The governor commended the officers of the council for their concerted and continued efforts to preserve the culture and heritage of the CNMI.
Guerrero read the proclamation, which stated in part that better understanding of the humanities would further enhance and enrich the lives of all people of the Commonwealth.
“The humanities help us to better understand our history, cultures, languages, political institutions, and social values,” reads part of the proclamation.
Guerrero said the humanities preserve a wealth of knowledge that helps people bring meaning to their lives and understand an increasingly complex world in which they live.
The CNMI Council for the Humanities, a private, non-profit corporation established in the Commonwealth in 1991, has taken the lead role in promoting and enhancing the humanities in the Commonwealth through several annual programs and financial assistance awarded to local groups and organizations through its Community Grants Program.
Guerrero said the proclamation also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the agency that has provided key support and financial assistance to the NMI Council for the Humanities since its inception.
The proclamation reads that the Council for the Humanities and the Office of the Governor, through the 2005 Governor’s Humanities Awards, will also jointly recognize outstanding individual contributions to the humanities, as well as the contributions made by donors, partners, and former members of the Council’s board of directors that have sustained and strengthened humanities programming over the past two decades.
Babauta said he is calling for the citizens of the Commonwealth to observe this month with its programs and activities lined up for the month.
