GOP predicts victory on Rota
The Republican Party claims that it will win the elections in Rota by a landslide.
A total of 328 vehicles reportedly participated in a GOP motorcade in the CNMI’s southern most island on Saturday, according to Republican Sen. Paul Manglona.
“The people have spoken. They want the young, enthusiastic, Republican team to lead them. The election is over in Rota. We’re just waiting to get everything finalized on Sunday morning [Nov. 6],” Manglona said.
In a separate interview Friday, Republican candidate Vicente Atalig also predicted that he would win Rota’s mayoral seat by a huge margin in the Nov. 5 election.
A former Rota High School teacher, Atalig worked for the then Marianas Public Lands Corporation before securing a seat in the 4th Rota Municipal Council.
Atalig also served a two-year term in the 10th Legislature.
In 1998, he was appointed Rota resident director for the Department of Commerce. He kept the position for four years.
In 2002, Atalig was named resident director for the Department of Lands and Natural Resources. He quit the post in January 2005 due to political differences with incumbent Rota Mayor Benjamin Manglona.
Atalig is running against three other candidates: Covenant Party’s Joseph Inos and independents Victor Hocog and Julian Taimanao.
Although a declared Covenant Party supporter, incumbent Mayor Manglona has thrown his support to Hocog’s candidacy. (Agnes E. Donato)
