Elementary school students, especially those who need improvement, should be attended to personally with one-on-one tutorials, according to senior students of Saipan Southern High School.

Some 30 SSHS senior students served as assistants to teachers and teaching aides at the Koblerville Elementary School one day last week.

Overall coordinators Jackie Cepeda and Eva Ito told Saipan Tribune that students who are struggling in class must have more attention in the class.

“If they can’t read, encourage them that they can make it,” she said, adding that talking to the students would make a difference.

Both officers said the SSHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps first period class plans to conduct a similar project that would extend community service to the CNMI.

Under the supervision of class adviser, Sgt. Richard Haugh, the senior students trooped to the elementary school as early as 7am Thursday last week to welcome the students and relieve the teachers and teaching aides for one day.

“We had a great time. A lot of students are really interested,” Ito said.

She said taking care of the kids was hard but she found it very rewarding in terms of helping the teachers and the schoolchildren.

The SSHS students said they realized the value of the project and they would recommend the next senior class to conduct same community service.

KES teaching aide Cynthia Pusuparaj said it was really a good project and had a cause since it has students help other students in school.

“They’re really helping out,” she said, adding that the senior students who were assisting her did an excellent job in helping the school children with their schoolwork.
