Cavite, MDX win in convincing fashion
Cavite-Country House and MDX Amateur Radio Club-Armtech scored easy wins in their debuts in the Budweiser-MARPAC 6th UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League Saturday evening at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Cavite was clearly the dominant team in the opener against 287 Club-McDonald’s as its cagers controlled the game from beginning to end for a 101-77 victory.
Playing a big role in Cavite’s opening quarter campaign was power forward Joy Dayrit as he knocked in three field goals and a pair of free throws, while the remaining crew worked their magic for a balanced scoring attack to give their team a comfortable 30-18 spread.
Cavite slowed down a bit in the second stanza and 287 Club’s William Opone took advantage and tried to rally his team back with 11 points, but nonetheless, the Country House-backed team still maintained its comfort zone and rested at the break with a 10-point cushion, 46-36.
Unfortunately for 287 Club, the Cavite players couldn’t wait any longer to bust the game wide open and did so in the third quarter, as Randy Arconado, Bernard Montano, and Dayrit spearheaded a 34-point eruption, helping Cavite to increase its lead to 22 points, 80-58, with only one period left.
It was a lock for victory No. 1 from there as Cavite easily held on for the win.
Banjo Basila and Arconado led Cavite with 16 points apiece, while Dayrit and Chris Domingo supported them with 15 and 12 points.
Opone led 287 Club with 17 points, while Francis Rebuyon and Gil Gapor added 13 points apiece. Ariel Jinang also chipped in 12 points.
The second game featured much of the same action as MDX turned a tightly fought bout into a convincing win over Bayani-HBR International, 84-55.
Bayani put up a good fight in the first 10 minutes of play and was down by just a point, 14-15, after the first quarter before the game began to slip away.
MDX outscored Bayani, 21-13, in the second period for a 36-27 halftime advantage, and padded their lead in the third period when guards Butch Sublemente, Ivan Devero, and Martin Moreno used their speed and combined for 19 of the team’s 29 points. Bayani was held to 14 points and MDX was in good shape heading into the payoff period, 65-41.
Bayani was not able to muster a comeback and MDX increased its lead before settling for the 29-point victory margin.
Sublemente led MDX with 17 points, while Devero and Moreno contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Rowel Tordilla finished with 18 points and Florante Villaluz had 11 points for Bayani.
