Athletes fly high on turkey week
Turkey day has come and gone but Thanksgiving was surely memorable to the athletes that gobbled up their challenges this past week in sports.
Last weekend, roadrunners Yoshi Suzuki and Bo Wang added feathers to their caps after topping the 12th staging of the Turkey Run organized by the Northern Marianas College Saturday morning.
Also earning their gravy were men’s volleyball players Quincy Johnson and Kacey Rengeular and their counterparts in the women’s side, Stephanie Arnold and Jasmine Anastacio, after they won NMIVA’s second qualifier for next year’s Micronesian Games.
Over at the CPA Airport Field, The Express Electronics Eagles soared high and walloped the winless Miller Barbarians, 48-8, to cap the end of the regular season of the 2005 Commonwealth Football League.
Riding the waves with the greatest of ease, meanwhile, were Haramitsu Ono of Saipan and Haruna Furasama of Japan, as the two stuffed their bags with the first place trophies in the men’s and women’s divisions of the 4th Annual Marianas Windsurfing Cup held Saturday off the waters of Micro Beach.
Taro Shirato and Airi Sawada, for their part, were definitely no turkeys as they made their home islands of Japan proud once more after finishing first in the men’s and women’s division of the 12th Annual Rota Blue Triathlon held on the southernmost chain of the Commonwealth Saturday.
Stuart Smith and Noriko Jim also gave their all when they topped the 21st Annual Turkey Trot Fun Run up to Mt. Tapochao on Thursday morning, which for all probability gave them a horse’s appetite for Thanksgiving dinner.
Monday also was a big day for basketball as the inaugural Northern Youth Basketball Association kicked off at the Garapan Basketball Court with 16 teams vying for championships in three divisions.
The week also saw action in the UFO cage league, four-person beach volleyball, and high school Rocball continue on various sports venues on island.
