2 men convicted for beating up brother-in-law
Two men have entered a guilty plea on charges they beat up their brother-in-law at a residence in Koblerville.
Gilbert L. Kaniki and his brother Orlando Wabol Limes pleaded guilty to assault and battery, which is a lesser included offense of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo accepted the defendants’ plea.
Following the plea agreement, Govendo sentenced Kaniki and Limes to six months in jail, all suspended except the five days that they already served.
Govendo placed the defendants on six months of probation and required them to pay $125 in probation and court assessment fees.
The judge ordered the defendants to undergo counseling evaluation at the Community Guidance Center.
During the probationary period, the defendants are not allowed to consume or possess alcoholic beverages.
The factual basis of the agreement stated that on July 3, 2005, the defendants “did unlawfully strike, beat, wound, or otherwise do bodily harm to Clark Ray,” their in-law.
Police records who that Ray, 29, suffered a cut to his forehead and a lump to the head. He was also arrested for disturbing the peace, and assault and battery for allegedly beating up his girlfriend.
Police said Ray, his girlfriend and her family members were drinking beer at the residence. Later, Ray confronted his girlfriend, head butted her on the forehead and bit her left ear.
The girlfriend “didn’t make a big thing about it” until they went inside the bedroom where they argued.
Limes called Ray outside. Limes and Kaniki along with another brother then beat up Ray, police said.
Kaniki allegedly struck Ray with a metal pipe several times. Limes punched him on the face repeatedly.
