NMC erects new signage
If you happen to pass by the Northern Marianas College going to Fina Sisu and you suddenly notice a flame-like concrete sculpture on the right corner, your eyes do not deceive you. It’s the new signage of the college welcoming guests and visitors.
Two new signage of the college have been recently installed at the Saipan campus both in front and at the back of the campus near the administration building. NMC president Tony Deleon Guerrero said NMC Tinian and NMC Rota also mounted signage on their campuses.
The signage, which stands over 15 feet tall, is inspired by the NMC logo with a blazing lamp, which represents the western symbol of the light of knowledge and a Proa at the base of the signage shaped into a canoe that is also a replica of the ancient Micronesian voyaging sea craft found in both Chamorro and Carolinian cultures.
Deleon Guerrero said the funding for the project came from their operations budget. The entire project had cost the college $14,200 for the two Saipan campus signage. He said the cost included the design and the construction costs plus the cost for buying the rights of the design.
He recalled that in Fall 2004 he was tasked to gather feedback from the college community to improve the programs and services of the college. He said he collected several suggestions and one of them was about putting up a sign that would welcome visitors in the campus, which would also represent the college.
There were four vendors that participated in the bidding process. Deleon Guerrero said he formed a task force for the selection of the best design that would truly depict the college spirit. Reyes Planning and Consulting Firm won for its design and cost proposal. The contractor started construction in September 2005.
The signage contains a welcome message in three languages: English, Chamorro and Carolinian. On the other side, inscribed are the NMC logo and its mission statement. The NMC president said there would be an official unveiling of the signage but due to its minor problem with its paint, the contract has yet to redo the painting and that would be time NMC would determine the schedule of the ceremony.
