Parents examine learning styles
In an increasingly participative method of parent-teacher gatherings at San Vicente Elementary School, PTA members last Tuesday spent an hour getting their minds around the most common learning styles identified in contemporary pedagogy. With the broad categories of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (tactile, physical) learning styles, parents first identified through a self-check inventory their own preferred learning styles. Group sharing of ideas and insights ensued.
With materials provided by the Northern Mariana Islands Occupational Information and Coordinating Committee, a federally funded program to inform and improve career and academic decision-making, parents in turn figured out their childrens preferred learning styles, and with teachers scattered among the groups, began discussing homework tips and study skills that parents may employ to help their children achieve their academic goals.
Led by the leadership team of parents Greg Borja, PTA president; David Atalig, PTA vice president; Elaine Terlaje, PTA secretary; SVE counselor Marsha Arriola, PTA treasurer; SVS administrators Janet Villagomez; principal; and James Rayphand, vice-principal, the interactive mode of the hour-long monthly PTA meeting is planned to be the standard deliberative method of the group.
