NYBA, Trench Warz Night wow crowd
Garapan Rollers I and Capitol Stars of the inaugural Northern Youth Basketball Association and fighters that showed off their skills in the Trench Warz Fight Night were the best in sports this past week.
G-Rollers I teams brought home the bacon in Division I and Division II of the NYBA, while Capitol Hill prevented a Garapan sweep when they won Division III.
Behind Mike Bondoc and Dino Palacios, G-Rollers I ruled the 12-and-under division after beating Capitol Hills Stars, 33-20, in the title game Sunday at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Bondoc and Palacios’ “older brothers” in the 13-15 year old division duplicated the feat when Jericho Cruz fired 14 points and Don Teregeyo 13 in G-Rollers I’s 58-27 rout of Matansa Sparks in the title game later in the afternoon.
Capitol Hills Stars then took home the championship in the 16-19 age group after humbling the “Pistol” Pete Iguel-led G-Rollers I, 79-78, even later in the day with all-world guard Dan Barcinas exploding for 21 points.
Frank Camacho and Jason Tarkong, for their part, showed that they were indeed the masters of cage fights in the two main events of the no-holds barred, mixed martial arts Trench Warz Fight Night held last Nov. 26 at Trench-Tech Purebred Saipan Gym.
Camacho hurt challenger Bernie Neth so bad with a series of left and right punches that it forced the referee to step in and stop the fight, while Tarkong out-smarted hulking Kelvin Fitial in an even fight that all came down to experience.
The past weekend also saw 2003 Suva South Pacific Games veterans Tyce Mister and Russ Quinn top the men’s division of the BSEA Two-Man Grass Tournament. The winner for the women’s side, meanwhile, was the pair of Aleta Glaze and Erika Komatsu.
The week also saw the Express Electronic Eagles top the Tinian Lightning for the second and last final slot for the 2005 Commonwealth Football League championship game, Marianas Racing Association hold its monthly points race, and the Saipan Tennis Association dedicate its 3rd Taga Tennis Tournament to departed friend and avid tennis player Berman Higgins.
Action in the 2005 Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League, Budweiser-Coca-Cola 6th Annual UFO Inter-Organization Basketball League, 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League, Saipan Major League’s Masters and Fall League competitions, men’s and women’s softball under the Saipan Softball Association, and 7th Annual Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Beach Volleyball League also continued in various sports venues around the island last week.
