Book launching set for new cultural publication
The NMI Council for the Humanities wishes to invite the general public to attend a book launching ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9am to 1pm at the Carolinian Utt in Garapan.
The ceremony, co-sponsored by the Chamolinian Cultural Village, the Office of Carolinian Affairs, and the Humanities Council, marks the publication of The Rope of Tradition: Reflections of a Saipan Carolinian by Lino M. Olopai.
This 258-page book, illustrated with numerous color and black and white photographs, documents Olopai’s longstanding efforts to discover, better understand, and preserve important aspects of his traditional Carolinian cultural heritage.
Olopai will be present to personally inscribe copies of his book that will be available for purchase at $15 per copy. The ceremony will also feature live music by local artists, refreshments, and free rides on a Carolinian sailing canoe.
The Rope of Tradition is the second title published under the Council’s “Micronesian Authors Initiative,” which gives priority to publishing the literary works of indigenous writers. Microchild: An Anthology of Poetry by the late Valentine N. Sengebau was the inaugural title published under this initiative in early 2004.
This publication project was supported, in part, by financial assistance received from the National Endowment for the Humanities and from the “Children of the Homeland Project” grant awarded to the Library Friends by the Administration for Native Americans.
Interested individuals are invited to contact Council staff at telephone number 235-4785 for more details about this event. (PR)
