PSS expects six new bus drivers
The Public School System is expecting six new bus drivers joining the Pupil Transportation Office this school year and probably start in January next year.
PSS associate commissioner for administrative services David M. Borja said the PSS is getting replacements for the retiring bus drivers and officers. He said three of the PSS bus drivers are retiring this month. One of them is former bus supervisor Herman Santos.
The PSS is retiring 61 employees this month. These retirees include teachers, teacher aides, administrative officers and bus drivers and officers.
Borja said they are also getting three more new bus drivers and one of them would be assigned to drive a Special Education bus. Five drivers would be driving the regular school buses. He said the PSS Human Resource Office started processing the application for the bus drivers in September. A total of 18 prospective bus drivers applied for the position.
The associate commissioner said the PSS just finished the interview process and selection this week. Now the HR office is now waiting for the results of the drug test of the selected drivers. Borja earlier said that it is very critical that the PSS employees especially at the PTO take and pass the drug test for the sake of the safety of the CNMI schoolchildren.
“We are hoping that the drivers would start driving the students to schools on Jan. 9,” Borja said.
PSS at the moment has 15 66-passenger capacity school buses but only 12 are currently operating on Saipan. Borja said the three buses have been idle for a long time now because of needed repairs. There are also six SPED buses and two small white vans also for SPED use.
All 20 public schools on Saipan have been assigned one white van each for administration purpose. The Head Start Program also has four vans on Saipan.
