A computer glitch reportedly wreaked havoc on the payroll of the Public School System, with employees complaining that they were deducted almost $200 each when they checked on their accounts yesterday afternoon.

Hopwood Junior High School Bilingual teacher Angelina P. Borja said she was surprised when she found out that her paycheck was almost $200 less that what she had expected to get when she called central office.

Borja then found out that she wasn’t alone when she heard her colleagues— school registrar Terry Shiprit and timekeeper officer Frank Dela Cruz—also complaining about the mysterious deductions on their latest paychecks.

Wanting to get to the bottom of the unexplained fund withdrawal, Borja called the PSS’ Finance Department and that was where she was informed that a computer malfunction was the culprit behind the deductions. She said the department told her that there was a computer error in the processing of the checks. She was reportedly informed that it was too late to rectify the mistake in the program and thus her salary was tax deducted almost three-fold.

Borja asked if PSS would be able to reimburse the deductions, but the central office employee told her that, based on procedures, she would have to file for standard income tax return to be able to get her money back.

She said Shiprit also told her that the central office told him that it’s only PSS employees who were affected by the deduction caused by the computer glitch.

Upon learning of the deductions, Borja immediately called her bank and requested for consideration on her monthly amortization. She said that, if she had not done that, she would have lost credibility and would probably even lose her house.

The Saipan Tribune tried to contact PSS director of finance Richard Waldo for comments but was unable to do so as of press time.
