Two top businessmen have been appointed to serve as members of the Marianas Visitors Authority’s board of directors.

Tan Holdings Corp. president Jerry Tan was named to fill the position vacated by former MVA chair David M. Sablan, who resigned effective Jan. 9, 2006.

Pelley Enterprises Inc. owner Anthony Pellegrino was designated to represent Saipan on the tourism board.

Both appointments became effective yesterday, Jan. 27, 2006. They are subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial expressed belief that Tan and Pellegrino would help MVA successfully carry out his goal to bring in a million tourists a year to the islands. Both businessmen, he said, are the right people for the job because of their vast experience in business.

The MVA board will have to elect a new chairman to replace Sablan. The board members will also have to hire a new managing director to fill the vacancy left by Vicky Benavente. The former board bought out her contract, which expires June 2006, following the failed re-election bid of her husband, Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.

Tan is the president of Tan Holdings Corp., a diverse holding company which does business in more than a dozen industries in the Western Pacific, including insurance, hotels, a cargo airline, aircraft ground handling, logistics, wholesale, movie theatres, travel agency, tours, real estate management, publishing and other businesses.

He is the president of Asia Pacific Hotels, overseeing the management of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, Saipan Grand Hotel, Fiesta Resort Guam, and Century Hotel on Saipan.

He is also the president and chief executive officer of the CTSI Logistics Group, and a director of the Luen Thai Group, a global conglomerate specializing in apparel manufacturing, logistics services and software development.

Pellegrino is also owner or principal stockholder of various companies, including Pelley Enterprises, Saipan Sea Ventures Inc., Hafa Adai Hometrade Inc., Pelley Boat Charters, Saipan Aqua Culture Inc., and Saipan Ice and Water.

He is also president of the Marine Revitalization Corp., which built the Outer Cove Marina.
