Cleanup effort gets more supporters
More volunteers showed up in last Sunday’s cleanup at the illegal dumping site on Hagoi Drive, the road leading to the Susupe Lake.
Former Environmental Interagency Cleanup Operation Team chair Benny Pangelinan, a supporter of the project, said Saipan Mayor Juan Borja Tudela went to the site with his men and volunteers from Filipino organization POWER to haul trash collected from the illegal dumpsite.
Pangelinan said the mayor’s team hauled bags of trash to the Lower Base Refuse Transfer Station.
Volunteers from MOVER, which is spearheading the project funded by a grant from Mobil Oil Mariana Islands, Inc., continued to pick up trash from the mangrove area by the roadside of Hagoi Drive, where tourists pass by to go to the lake.
Pangelinan said residents nearby have begun showing their appreciation for the volunteers’ efforts in removing the eyesore.
House Speaker Oscar Babauta also went to the cleanup site to show his support for the project. Babauta, together with Rep. Jesus Lizama, donated food and refreshments to the volunteers.
Last Sunday’s activity was MOVER’s third Sunday to clean up the dumping site by Hagoi Drive in Susupe. In the past, MOVER also conducted cleanup of stormwater drainages along Saipan’s western shores.
In the new project, MOVER would be cleaning up stormwater drainages and dumping sites in Hagoi Drive—from the intersection of Texas Road to the end of the road near the lake—and the Tun Joaquin Road in Chalan Kanoa.
