Pedestrian killed in car accident found at fault
A pedestrian who was killed after she was hit by a car along Middle Road in Navy Hill on Jan. 21 was found at fault, police said yesterday.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric F. David said the Traffic Investigation Unit concluded that the pedestrian was the cause of the crash.
David said that, based on TIU’s investigation and an interview with a witness and the driver of the vehicle, the victim was at fault for not crossing on a properly marked crosswalk.
The DPS spokesman said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and that there was poor lighting in the area—factors that may have contributed to the accident.
Police earlier said the victim, a Chinese national, sustained severe trauma to the head and body. She was pronounced dead at 7:25pm on that same day.
Police said they would not release the identity of the victim until the next of kin has been notified about the incident.
The accident was reported to DPS at 6:41pm.
Police said a Toyota Corolla car driven by Jun Jing Yang was traveling north using the outer lane.
Two pedestrians suddenly crossed the highway heading east. Yang’s car struck one of the two pedestrians.
On that same day, a Chinese woman was also killed after she was hit by a vehicle along Middle Road in Tanapag.
The victim, a 33-year-old Chinese, reportedly sustained a skull fracture and internal hemorrhage.
The accident was reported to DPS at 3:12pm.
Preliminary investigation showed that two female garment workers were walking north on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
A vehicle struck from the rear the one who was closer to the highway.
Police said the vehicle fled the scene and sped north.
David said no one has been arrested yet in this case.
