A firetruck caused a five-car collision, including a police vehicle, at the traffic intersection near Happy Market along Beach Road in Garapan late afternoon Wednesday.

Fortunately, no one was injured, according to Traffic Officer Daniel R. Quitugua.

The firetruck was slightly damaged, while the four other cars had moderate damage.

Quitugua said investigation indicate that the collision was caused by the firetruck when its brakes malfunctioned.

Investigation show that the firetruck was heading south along Beach Road to respond to a fire incident in Kannat Tabla on Wednesday at 6pm.

As the firetruck was approaching the intersection, the driver applied the brakes to slow down because the traffic light had turned red and there were cars ahead that had already stopped.

The driver then noticed that the brakes were not working, prompting him to turn the truck to the left. The firetruck struck a car that was on the left turn lane.

The impact caused a chain reaction as the car hit another car. A police officer who was in another car and noticed the collision tried to go forward to avoid being hit. But a car coming from China Town area struck the police’s vehicle.

Emergency medical technicians responded to make sure everybody was fine.

As part of the Department of Public Safety’s standard operating procedures, the firetruck’s driver was subjected to a breath test.

Officer Quitugua said the firetruck’s driver was cleared of any drugs or alcohol consumption.

Sources said the driver of the firetruck was a certain firefighter Norita.

In other auto crash incidents, a van and a car collided at the intersection of Middle Road near New SM Store in Chalan Laulau early yesterday morning.

Police said one was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. One man complained of back pain, but it was not clear yet whether he was the one arrested for DUI.

In As Terlaje Hill, two drivers were injured when their cars collided in the eastbound lane of the highway near the former YCO Store on Thursday morning.

One driver complained of chest pain, while the other driver had a headache. The vehicles had moderate damage. No one was arrested.
