At least $12 million is needed for the repairs of power plant engines in Lower Base, according to the administration.

Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez said yesterday that for a top overhaul alone, each engine would need $1.5 million to $2 million.

Power Plant 1 has eight engines, including one that has been down since last year.

Villagomez, a former executive director of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., said that for a major overhaul, each engine would require $3 million to $4 million.

He said that right now, all seven engines at Power Plant 1 are due for maintenance and repair.

He said this is needed, although some of the engines had already undergone repairs during the Babauta administration.

The previous administration spent over $3 million last year in engine repairs.

Sometime in October 2005, the CUC also signed a contract amounting to about $600,000 for the purchase, shipping, and installation of a new crankshaft for engine 4 at Power Plant 1. CUC said that it would take one year to have it made, shipped, and installed.

Engine 4, which has been down since July this year, generates 6.5MW.

Engine 3, which also produces 6.5MW, also went down but this was fixed shortly. When Engine 3 was operational during the third quarter in 2005, CUC voluntarily shut down Engine 1 for needed repair and maintenance work. Engine 1 produces 6.5MW.

By design, Power Plant 1 has a capacity of 81.2MW.
