CNMI observes Boy Scouts Week
The CNMI local government recently proclaimed the Boy Scouts Week for the community to observe starting yesterday until Sunday, Feb. 12.
Acting Gov. Tim Villagomez signed the proclamation last Thursday to recognize the local members of the Boys Scouts of America. Villagomez recognized the young boy scouts present during the proclamation signing that was also attended by Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Daisy V. Bier.
Villagomez said the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated to offer effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness training for youth.
“Obviously, I am not a boy, or a Boy Scout, but I am a strong advocate for the qualities this program promotes, for the betterment of our entire community,” he quipped.
The Boy Scouts of America was established on Feb. 8, 1910. It describes itself as a vital organization for boys who are growing up, enabling them to develop self-reliance, courage, patriotism and kindred virtues, using methods that are now common in Boy Scouts.
“It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices during their lifetime in achieving their full potential.”
It added that the Boy Scouts in the Northern Mariana Islands started in 1949 in conjunction with the 92nd anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America where the organization’s goals have always been to reflect the values of the diverse cultures in the CNMI.
The acting governor called on members of the community to answer the immediate need of this program. “Our young men are in need of troop leaders in various villages, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask responsible and dedicated members of our community to step forward and answer that call.”
