The NMI Chapter of the American Red Cross had another successful Walkathon on all three islands this past weekend. With over 1,350 registered walkers on Saipan alone, this set an all-time record.

“We had more than 2,000 people participating, if you include all the parents and family members who joined the Walk,” said NMI Chapter director John Hirsh.

He was echoed by John D. Guerrero, this year’s Walkathon co-chair, who said: “We are humbled by our community’s willingness to support all the great work we do here in the Commonwealth.”

The Walkathon included a health fair, obstacle course, and game booths.

Guerrero believes that collaboration is the key to a great event. “Without the support of NMC-CRESS, Department of Public Health, NMI nursing students and many others, our event wouldn’t have been a success.”

The Chapter raised nearly $45,000 from events on Saipan, Rota and Tinian. The money stays locally to support the various services offered by the NMI Chapter. This includes disaster relief assistance, community disaster education, health and safety programs like first aid and CPR, as well as emergency communications for military families.

The NMI Chapter relies on the generous support of volunteers to fulfill its mission of helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
