HAGATNA, Guam—While students today send photos to each other on their cell phones or use a CD-ROM to do their homework, most do not know the fundamentals of saving or basic money skills. Recent studies show that children are not learning about money management at school or at home. And according to the U.S. Commerce Department, our abysmally low national savings rate rivals the rates during the Great Depression.

This is a serious national—and local problem—but it can be addressed with help from all of us. For the fourth year, the Guam Bankers Association is participating in a program called National Teach Children To Save, created by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation.

On Tuesday, April 25, 2006, dozens of local bankers will teach savings fundamentals to elementary, middle and high school children in the Guam Public School System.

For more information on the program, contact Toni Aflague, Bank of Guam 472-5236.

For teachers requesting information from the GPSS, contact Ken Chargualaf at 475-0426. (PR)
