Department of Public Works Secretary Jose S. Demapan has trimmed DPW’s operational costs by almost 66 percent.

Since he assumed office, Demapan said he initiated cost-saving measures by cutting tremendous operational costs.

“We do it more efficiently. There’s no more delay…right now we have a mission there to go and do the job. No delays,” he said.

The secretary cited that he stopped employees from taking department vehicles to their homes and during their lunch.

“Before, they would take the vehicles to their homes and when they go for lunch. After work they just take the vehicles,” he said.

By stopping such use, Demapan said DPS is saving a lot on fuel costs.

“They have to remember it’s more difficult now. Previously it’s okay because probably they had a lot of cash. But now we don’t have cash,” he said.

The secretary said he had a meeting with managers and directors in which he informed them about the government’s financial problem.

“They understand. This is real; it’s not a game,” said Demapan, referring to the crisis.
