Brewers rally to pound pinstripers, 14-9
Trailing 6-1, fresh-faced kid Luis Iguel ran in from left field with a smile to take over pitching duties from the wild-bearded Clint Quitugua midway through the second inning and stopped the bleeding long enough for the Toyota Brewers to rally for a 14-9 win over the Northern Yankees in the Saipan Major League Sunday afternoon at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
The youngster came in to allow three runs off of nine hits through the final seven and a third while fanning eight batters, but Iguel would have never earned the win without a little help from his friends at the plate.
The Brewers responded to Iguel’s arrival with four runs in their first at bats, but the real explosion occurred in the bottom of the sixth when the Brew crew went off for eight runs to take a 14-9 lead.
First baseman B.J. Sablan went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple, and an RBI, and all-around infielder Jess Mesa drove in three runs off of a pair of singles and a double to finish 3-for-5. They weren’t the only hot hitters as Jester Garcia drove in three runs off of three singles and pitcher turned infielder Jonathan Camacho went 3-for-5 with a pair of base knocks and a double.
The new-look Brewers took the lead in the first when Mesa doubled in Tyrone Omar, but they quickly fell in a hole when the Yankees beat up on Quitugua by ripping off six runs in the second.
Manager Tony Rogolifoi’s maroon platoon answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning but the pinstripers responded with three in the top of the third to take a 9-5 advantage early on.
The Brewers pulled to within three runs of the Yankees when Sablan turned his triple into a score by taking advantage of a wild pitch in the fourth, but all heck broke out in the sixth when they exploded for eight runs off of six hits to wrest control of the game for good.
