‘Ebb & Flow’ to open arts fest
Poetry and illustrations of the Pacific take center stage at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library this week at the opening of the Flame Tree Arts Festival.
The “Ebb & Flow: Tides of Culture” exhibit will open on Thursday, April 27, at 3pm in the main library, followed by the poetry forum at 3:30pm at the newly renovated library Cultural Center. Opening ceremonies of the festival will follow at 6pm at the main festival grounds at American Memorial Park.
“’Ebb & Flow’ is an exploration of expressions of Pacific Island cultures through literary, visual and performing arts,” said project coordinator Catherine Perry Anderson.
The poetry forum will feature Chamorro and Carolinian proverbs, original poetry, and recitations of poetry from CNMI and other Pacific islands. Featured speakers will include local published poet Esther Sablan Seman, Chamorro translator Charlene S. Cruz, author Lino Olopai, and Val Sengebau Poetry Contest winner Ryan Ortiz.
“We have a tremendous amount of poetry resources in our community, both in written and intellectual property form,” said Anderson. “The ’Ebb & Flow’ poetry forum is the medium we have chosen to tap share those resources.”
The exhibit of “Ebb & Flow: Tides of Culture” illustrations by Pacific Island youth will remain open throughout the festival during regular library hours. (PR)
