Northwest Airlines’ second flight from Tokyo using a Boeing 757 landed on Saipan as scheduled Monday midnight, officials said.

Northwest Guam and Saipan manager Richard A. Parsons said the plane landed at the Saipan International Airport at 1:25am on April 25. It flew back to the Narita international Airport at 5:20am the same day.

It was not immediately known how many passengers were on the flight to Saipan.

The new air service is set to fly to and from Narita and Saipan three times a week. The flight can carry 400 economy and 30 business class passengers.

The second Northwest flight from Tokyo is expected to generate an additional 5,160 seats from Japan per month.

Commonwealth Ports Authority acting executive director Reno Celis said the flight would be coming in on a daily basis from May 1 to 9 this year, during the Japanese Golden Week.

“More passengers are coming during that week. We certainly welcome more passengers. It’s nice that they are coming daily. Our hope is for them to fly daily at all times,” said Celis.

A recent JTB survey said that some 43,000 Japanese tourists would be traveling to Saipan and Guam during the weeklong break.

Meantime, Northwest also flies daily to Saipan from Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya.

The airline introduced daily nonstop flights between Osaka and Saipan last October just when Japan Airlines stopped its regular flights to the island.
