CPA test center dream moves closer to reality
Two officials from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy will be arriving on Saipan April 28 for a three-day visit that could possibly lead toward the establishment of a U.S. CPA testing center here in the Commonwealth.
According to James Whitt, chairman of the CNMI Board of Accountancy, this would be the association’s first visit to the CNMI.
The two NASBA officials, Joe Cote and Jose Manzon, will be accompanied by Dave Ginsburg and Al Salmi, two officials of Prometric, a major national test provider.
While on Saipan, the visitors will be investigating the feasibility of establishing a computer test center in the CNMI and they will meet with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and members of the CNMI Board of Accountancy, Whitt said.
Besides enhancing CNMI accounting standards, it is expected that many Asians will travel to the CNMI to take the CPA examination and later for continuing professional education.
“The CNMI’s close location to Asia and favorable immigration situation may make the CNMI a particularly convenient location for CPA candidates. This may add to the CNMI’s tourism numbers and be an economic plus for the CNMI,” Whitt said.
Guam’s Computer Testing Center has already, in only two years, become the No. 1 most popular testing center in the United States.
In 2005, NASBA admitted the CNMI Board of Accountancy as its 55th and newest member. NASBA provides a forum for improving accounting nationwide and has already assisted in training the CNMI Board.
The CNMI Board of Accountancy was created by CNMI Public Law to protect the public by promoting the reliability of information that is used for guidance in financial transactions. The CNMI Board of Accountancy law regulates the practice of Certified Public Accountants to improve accountancy standards in the CNMI.
