The CNMI Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps has completed its yearly Spring Adventure Training Encampment, which took place from April 7 to 10 at Captain Torres’ farm.

Three local high schools—Marianas High School, Kagman High School, and Saipan Southern High School—hosted the Adventure Training. A combined total of 140 cadets from all the high schools took part in the various activities such as First Aid and CPR classes.

For the First few days, the cadets were drilled by SGM Kiyoshi and the other instructors to understand the concept of the Adventure Training, which was to interact with one another and enhance their training skills with one word: “Safety”. Safety was a very big concern for the instructors due to the majority of the cadets being minors. But the cadets had no worry at all because the NMI Red Cross Chapter helped instruct the cadets on the proper way to conduct CPR and First Aid. At the end of the day, 70 cadets were certified in both First Aid and CPR.

Besides First Aid classes, a number of classes were also available, including one on the brown tree snake. This class was instructed by the brown tree snake experts.

On the last day, all the cadets got hands-on experience on how to get through a rope that was instructed by SGM Kiyoshi. MSG Burke conducted the land navigation class; the SSHS Raiders taught knot-tying; MHS cadets handled the Leadership Reaction Course.

Cadets had the opportunity to socialize and interact with others during the cadet time they had each day. The cadets sang karaoke, practiced marching, and played volleyball. On the last day MHS and KHS cadets presented plays while the SSHS cadets managed a mini “Miss Pugua Beauty pageant.” C/ISG Castro Donovan of Alpha Company won the pageant.

The cadets, instructors, and school administrators would like to extend their gratitude to the NMI Red Cross Chapter, Department of Lands and Natural Resources, volunteers and sponsors of the event. The cadets greatly appreciate all that had been done to make the 2006 Adventure Training a learning and fun experience to remember. (PR)
