Ying Yang Clan stands alone at PIC
“Chair Man” Max Kuan’s Ying Yang Clan continued to roll at the Pacific Islands Club on Thursday night as the unstoppable squad extended its winning streak to five games and now stands alone as the 7th Annual Spring Co-ed Four’s Beach Volleyball League’s sole undefeated team.
Lite U Up had been tied atop the league standings with the Clan until Linda Anastacio’s Up pups lost their first sets of the season against what Dan “Barno” Westphal called their toughest competition so far.
Ying Yang Clan 3, Last Call 0
Just like Rod Tidwell said in Jerry Maguire, it was all about “the Kuan” in Thursday night’s opener as the Ying Yang Clan pounded the Clubmate-laden Last Call squad in straight sets.
There was little that Amanda “The Pouncing Panda” Puleo could do against the Clan, and they felt the loss of sand court legend Evan Hunsberger early on as Last Call suffered an 11-0 loss in the opener.
Despite being tagged by the skunk, Last Call played better in the following sets in losing 11-3 and 11-5 efforts.
The Clan returns to actions next Tuesday, May 30, in search of its sixth straight win against the MHS Dolphin Divers at 6:30pm, while Last Call hopes next month brings paradise by the dashboard lights on Thursday, June 1, against Lite U Up at 7:30pm.
Chafed Grundle 2, Lite U Up 1
One of the league’s toughest teams fell for the first time of the season as Lite U Up was upset by Warwick “Not So” Lowe, Chris “Yes that Chris” Nelson, Mark McDonald, and Heather Kennedy of Chafed Grundle.
Lite U Up lit the Grundle up early by spanking the Chafed chaps 11-5 in the first set, but the teacher, newsman, lawyer, and joker turned the tables with an 11-5 win of their own in the second to even the set count at one apiece.
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the rubber match, Lite U Up suffered a power outage when the rain began to fall on San Antonio by twice blowing four-point leads. Despite trailing 8-4, Chafed Grundle scored seven unanswered points to wrangle a hard fought 11-8 win that unseated the Lites.
The Grundle faces its first match against the students next week when the triumvirate faces the MHS Dolphin Splashers on Thursday, June 1, at 5:30pm, while Lite U Up seeks redemption next Tuesday, May 30, from Just Put It In at 7:30pm.
Dirk Digglers 3, Victoria’s Secret 0
Kirk Palacios’ squad finally showed what they are capable of when they focus as the Dirk Digglers put an end to their three-game skid by sweeping Victoria’s Secret on Thursday night in front of an energetic crowd.
Kaycee Rengaelur showed the stuff that made him one of the front runners to represent the CNMI on the beach in the 6th Micronesian Games, and teammate Rob Jordan made all the right moves on a night when the Digglers caught all the breaks.
Despite well-rounded play from all of the Digglers, the win didn’t come easy as they won all of their sets by the slimmest of margins, 12-10, 11-9, and 11-9. Laurie Peterka’s time spent practicing on the Garapan sand paid off when she took the PIC court as her hits and reactions were fast and furious.
Though they picked up their fourth loss of the season, Victoria’s Secret was still a force on the courts as Stephanie Arnold, “Crafty” Nick Castro, Jason Ruluked, Nick Gross, Victoria Riordan, and Teresa Miller played tough.
The Dirk Digglers look to turn their win into a streak next Tuesday, May 30, when they challenge the MHS Dolphin Splashers at 5:30pm, while Victoria’s Secret returns to the sand later that night for a tough match against Sand In My Pants at 8:30pm.
Sand In My Pants 3, Just Put It In 0
Jon Cramer, Bruce Berline, E.J. Lee, and company laid a smack down on Ike Diopolus, Martin Castro, and the Q-crew as Sand In My Pants caught Just Put It In with its pants down to sweep all three sets in the finale.
After breezing through the opener, 11-4, the sandy bunch played tough in the face of stiffer competition by taking the final two sets with back-to-back 11-9 scores to earn its fourth win of the season.
As a result, both teams are locked in a third place tie with identical 4-1 records, but they have a chance to improve their spot in the standings soon.
Just Put It In tries to just get a win next Tuesday, May 30, against a hungry Lite U Up squad at 7:30pm, while Sand In My Pants tries to learn Victoria’s Secret in the night’s finale at 8:30pm.
