Tan Holdings hands over $25K to MGOC
Bob Coldeen smiled as he explained to a small poolside gathering at the Saipan Grand Hotel that the push to support the 6th Micronesian Games is following the same path as the 1990 event, and Saipan’s summertime snowball continue to grow yesterday as Tan Holdings Corp. presented a $25,000 donation to its organizers.
“Saipan and the CNMI rarely host an event of this magnitude. We know that the government is in a financial crisis so it’s important for the private sector to contribute to the Games,” he said.
Tan Holding president Jerry Tan said that he was pleased with what he termed as “the tremendous support” from the business community in the CNMI’s time of need and said that he felt that it was more of an obligation to give back to his island neighbors.
An accomplished athlete in his own right, Tan said that he knows fully well the power that the local teams will enjoy next month when they compete against the finest opponents Micronesia has to offer in their own backyard.
“Everyone wants the chance to compete in front of the home crowd and we want to help them. The Games lasts for only two weeks, and after the visiting athletes leave we will have better facilities, and that’s good,” he said.
The donation underscores the growing community support for the quadrennial event and comes with as a combination with $10,000 in cash going directly to the MGOC and the remaining $15,000 coming in the form of 200 room nights at the Saipan Grand Hotel in Susupe.
Micronesian Games Organizing Committee vice chairman Rex Palacios was on hand to receive a pair of checks from Tan; Lynn Knight, Tan Holdings vice president for corporate affairs; and Century Group of Companies president David Sablan Friday morning; and explained that everything is coming together as planned.
“We are very, very grateful that Tan Holdings is supporting us. We need the hotel rooms for the technical officials and the Saipan Grand Hotel is in a very convenient location for them to stay. We’re going to meet our budget,” said Palacios.
