The administration has not fully reviewed a petition calling for the removal of two top officials of the Department of Corrections, but governor’s spokesperson vowed yesterday that the employees’ complaints would be handled fairly.

Several Corrections officers have submitted a petition for the immediate dismissal of acting Corrections Secretary Juan M. Ayuyu and acting Operations Capt. Georgia M. Cabrera. The petitioners have accused Ayuyu and Cabrera of discrimination and abuse of authority. Ayuyu has denied the allegation.

Press secretary Charles Reyes Jr. said the lieutenant governor was aware of the petition. The governor had been off-island and is expected to return today.

“The governor is not here to personally review it. But as soon as he gets back he’ll look into it. The veracity of the statement needs to be carefully examined. At this point, we don’t have all the facts we can’t take action based on an informed decision making process,” Reyes said.

“[The petition] was unexpected, but we will look into it. The governor’s is going to be fair and he will make a good management decision, if a decision needs to be made,” he added.

According to the petition, Corrections officers are “emotionally, mentally and physically stressed” because of the way Ayuyu and Cabrera are treating them. The petitioners say Ayuyu and Cabrera often yell at supervisors and subordinates in front of inmates and staff.

They also allege verbal harassment, misuse of government vehicles, vindictiveness, unfair treatment, and lack of communication between officials and subordinates.
