Del Rosario earns October crown
Arnel Del Rosario saved his best for last and managed to overcome deficits after his first two games to win the October Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament Monday night at the Capital Bowling Center.
Del Rosario was behind many bowlers after connecting on 176 and 202 pins in the first two games, and trailed leader Richard Leong, who had 438 pins, by 60.
Leong is not known for letting the lead slip away, but on this night, Del Rosario was able to erase the deficit and surpass Leong for the lead.
After breaking the 200 mark in the second game, Del Rosario broke into a zone of his own and downed 231 pins to take a one-pin lead over Leong, 609-608.
Del Rosario kept his flow and was able to increase his lead and secure the title after bruising 232 pins in his final game.
With that, Del Rosario finished with 841 pins, averaging 210.25 pins per game.
Leong finished in second with 815 pins, knocking down 212 and 226 pins in his first two games. He cooled off in the third game for 170 pins, enabling Del Rosario to move ahead, then closed strong with 207 pins for an average of 203.75 pins per game.
Youth bowler Raymond Angeles placed third as he finished just two pins back of Leong with 813. Angeles was able to leave his mark on 194, 191, 213, and 215 pins in his four games for an average of 203.25 pins per game.
With their performances, Del Rosario was able to walk away with the championship trophy and $150, while Leong and Angeles won $70 and $40.
Veteran Dannie Robles placed fourth with 805 pins and pocketed $35, while Simon Manacop and Raymond Zapanta won $25 and $20 after placing fifth and sixth with 798 and 793 pins.
Zapanta’s performance on Sunday (790), which led the field at that point, was the seventh best of the tournament. Edgar Talavera (784) and Orlie Ebuen (783) also made it to the top 10, while Leong’s 782 pins on Sunday was 10th best.
The Pepsi King of the Lanes is held every month and is organized by the Saipan Bowling Association. It culminates with a season-ending championship to determine the King of the Year.
