Three still perfect at PIC
The frontrunners of the Blue Division increased their lead over the eight-team field as the undefeated Dingleberries, Kraken, and Luther’s Ride improved to 4-0 on Thursday night during the 8th Annual Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Volleyball League at the Pacific Islands Club.
Taula Peter’s Dingleberries haven’t lost their staying power as the first place squad has yet to lose a set this season, allowing their opponents just two and a half points per night against their impressive 33 point per night average.
The powerful Berries recently hammered the Eagles of Grace Christian Academy with a three-set sweep in which they outscored the students by a combined tally of 33-6. After skunking the Eagles 11-0 in the opener, the Dingleberries rounded out the night with back-to-back 11-3 sets to secure their fourth straight win.
Scott Eck’s Kraken crew is just as talented and has seen the same success thus far with an undefeated record midway through the season and 127 points scored. The only difference is that Kraken has allowed nearly twice as many points against over the same stretch and dropped one set. That is still 14.5 points per game, or just under five points against per set—impressive by league standards.
Kraken’s latest victim was the Marianas High School’s Dolphins Just Wanna Have Fun, who went down by a combined score of 33-14. Eck’s bunch opened with a one-sided 11-3 win in the first set before clinching the win with an 11-7 score in the second. The Dolphins went down 11-4 in the finale, but their spirits never waned as they faced their Goliath.
Luther’s Ride also downed MHS students Thursday night as they spanked the Kawawang Dolphins with back-to-back-to-back 11-1 scores to win their fourth in a row. Youngster Luther Taylor assembled a talented team in his first year in the league, and veteran Dan “Barno” Westphal has mentored Taylor along the way.
The showdown between Luther’s Ride and Kraken will be the first match-up of undefeated teams since the opening two weeks of the Blue Division season and should draw a large crowd to the PIC at 7:30pm Tuesday night.
On the other side of the coin, Afternoon Delight extended its winless streak to four games after losing to Somethin’ Fishy. Noke “Where’s My Hair” Rogopes and company evened their record at 2-2 after taking the first two sets, 11-2 and 11-3, before Kathleen Carey was overjoyed with her Afternoon Delight when they took the final set, 11-6, to save face.
The action continues Tuesday night as Dolphins Just Wanna Have Fun (1-3) face off against the Kawawang Dolphins (0-4) at 5:30pm, followed by the Eagles of Grace Christian Academy against Afternoon Delight (0-4) at 6:30pm. Luther’s Ride (4-0) battles Kraken (4-0) at 7:30pm, followed by the finale between Somethin’ Fishy (2-2) and the Dingleberries at 8:30pm.
