With the dog days of summers behind us and the winds picking up, the Over The Reef Yacht Club is already preparing for the 2007 Laguna Regatta by training crews. While their expertise on the water will provide entertainment to all who watch and participate, the organizers will have to show off another set of skills to get the race underway.

The biggest sailing event in the Northern Mariana Islands is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, and Sunday, 4, 2007, and board member Ron Smith said there is little time to spare.

“We only have three more meetings before the big event and we’ll be discussing the preliminary logistics for the event, writing up the initial lists of entrants and boats, and perhaps most importantly, getting the sponsorship requests in line,” he said.

The challenge ahead is great but OTRYC members are still open to sharing their passion for the sea with those who have not yet found their sea legs. Smith said that there are still plenty of opportunities for aspiring sailors to weigh anchor this month as several club members will be going out on Sundays. The OTRYC is able to help get the newcomers out on one of the boats but they should act soon because the window will not be as wide open in the near future as the sailors prepare for the regatta in earnest next month.

Organizers are asking that anyone interested in participating, volunteering, or contributing to the regatta attend their monthly meting tomorrow at 6:30pm at Oleai Beach Bar and Grille.

Those unable to join them can still lend a hand but should contact the OTRYC via email at webmaster@otryc.org.
