San Vicente Elementary School will be hosting its 1st Annual Canary Walkathon this Saturday, Nov. 18, at the SVES baseball field, from 7am to 11am.

Coordination of the event is being spearheaded by the school’s Site Community Based Management Council, which is composed of PTA officers, representatives of the school staff and other members of the San Vicente community.

PTA president David Atalig introduced the idea as “a way to make some money for the school, but more importantly this will be an opportunity for our community to enjoy and promote healthier lifestyles. Among other things, we hope to see parents and students sharing in the experience of walking together with an end result that will be beneficial to the school, its students and the community at large.”

Proceeds from the event are slated for the renovation of the school’s athletic facilities, including the development of a walking track within the school’s campus and a revamping of the school’s basketball court. Initial costs estimates for the walking-track project range from $20,000.00 to $25,000.

According to Jim Rayphand, the school’s acting principal, the SVES PTA and the community have “a long history of unwavering support for the school.”

“The recent statistics coming out of the Project Familia and other census information which indicates that 55 percent of students surveyed were obese makes initiatives like our Canary Walk-A-Thon not only appreciated but also very necessary. …The proposed walking track and an improved basketball court is a bonus that will enable some continuity in physical activities for members of our school community,” Rayphand said.

Members of the PTA and other community members have been soliciting support for the event and welcome all donations both monetary and in-kind. For more information, people can call the school at (670) 237-3791/3 or 237-3761. [B][I](PR)
