Senate President Joseph Mendiola is back in the Commonwealth and assumed the post of acting governor yesterday.

Mendiola took over from Senate Floor Leader Felix T. Mendiola, who had served as the CNMI’s top executive since Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez left Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006.

The Senate president will keep his temporary duties until Villagomez comes back on Friday from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Island Business Opportunities Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Sen. Joseph Mendiola himself had been off-island, traveling to the Philippines and then Malaysia reportedly to meet with potential investors.

In addition to Villagomez, top Commonwealth officials attending the investment conference in Hawaii are Senate Vice President Pete P. Reyes, Senate legislative secretary Maria Frica Pangelinan, Finance Secretary Eloy Inos, Commerce Secretary James Santos, and press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is also off-island. He went on medical leave starting Oct. 4 to undergo spine surgery at the UCLA Medical Center and is now still recuperating in California. He is not expected back in the CNMI until the first week of December.
