Strong possibility CUC may not push through with privatization

There is a strong possibility that the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will not push through with its plan to get an additional 10 megawatts of energy.

CUC executive director Anthony C. Guerrero, however, pointed out that they have not canceled the proposals.

“We are looking into whether or not we really needed at this point because primarily there are several factors that occurred since the time when we requested for proposals,” Guerrero said.

He cited that there is a level of conservation that has allowed CUC some capacity or margin of reserve which made the utility agency lift the load shedding schedule.

The reserve, Guerrero noted, has also allowed CUC so perform some maintenance on a more periodic basis.

“The issue at hand is whether to continue to commit more funds to the existing units and parts or whether we want to bring in this emergency temporary units and pay for them,” he said.

“I think more and more we’re looking at the possibility of just continuing our maintenance program with our existing units at this point,” Guerrero said.

The maintenance, he said, will not cost much to CUC as compared to brining in emergency units.

“But it is not to say we will not meet more capacity because at the same time as we all know the engines down there are really in need of a lot of work. In any given day something can happen,” he said.

CUC received three competitive bids—one from Malaysia, one from Singapore, and the other from the United States.

CUC’s request for proposal is for the emergency 10-megawatt power that they are anticipating to put on as a back up for the CUC’s power plants.

CUC was supposed to make the selection among the three bidders last Oct. 24.
