About 400 to 500 feet of high voltage wire snapped yesterday afternoon from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s poles, damaging four vehicles and causing power outage along Beach Road in Garapan.

Fortunately, no one was hit by the live wire, police at the scene told Saipan Tribune.

Police said that at 1:38pm they received a call that a live wire snapped between the CUC poles near Ace Pool Ball and Western Union.

The sparkling wire hit the body of three vehicles parked in front of Wild Bill’s Bar and Grill and another vehicle parked near the Ace Pool Ball.

There was no flame, but the vehicles got minor damage, police and witnesses said.

CUC crew immediately responded and removed the wire from the shoulder of the road. Police officers also blocked the vicinity.

CUC spokesperson Pamela Mathis said the outage, which occurred at 1:24pm, only happened at the feeder 2 Garapan Beach Road line.

Mathis explained that something hit the line out in the field that caused an automatic tripping.

She said an automatic trip off occurs when something interrupts the current on the higher voltage wire.

Mathis said the live wire fell probably due to weather condition.

At 2:01pm power was restored along Beach Road Garapan except the area where the wire fell as CUC crew were still fixing the problem.
