The website for the Saipan Linux Users Group or SLUG is already up, with website address http://groups-beta.google.com/group/saipan-linux.

According to Northern Marianas College instructor and Linux enthusiast David Rumptz, interested individuals who want to join the group could log in and fill out the forms.

“You need to go to the site to join the group. Once you join you will get regular e-mail messages from the group’s website,” he said.

He said the website would also function as a support network for the few Linux users on the island.

As a Linux user for several years now, he said a Linux Users Group will serve as a support network because users would always have questions where they wouldn’t find answers through the Internet.

“The Linux Users Group is a way for you to find the answers to these questions. In addition, the Linux Users Group can assist you with incomprehensible answers that are sometimes sent your way. The Linux Users Group can help you decipher this cryptic information and make it understandable,” he said.

Rumptz said that Linux users could post questions for the group to answer. Other users could also post answers and this will hopefully expand their knowledge.

“This is the beginning of the site so as the years progress the site will become a source of valuable data about Linux and computers,” he added.

With the users group and its website, the members could also spread the word about Linux and build the Linux family on the island one person at a time, he said.

The group hopes to get together soon. The Linux group should expect to get a message about a first meeting that will be arranged soon.

“I want to give time to let people join the group before I start sending out messages. But you can feel free to send out messages once you become a member,” said Rumptz.

In related news, Rumptz’s projects and articles have been picked up by the official Linux website. The college, through acting president Danny Wyatt, congratulated Rumptz for this achievement.
