A 49-year-old restaurant employee was indicted for trafficking less than a gram of methamphetamine or “ice” on Saipan.

Edward S. Iriarte was charged with two counts of distribution of a controlled substance.

During Thursday’s hearing, Iriarte, who was with court-appointed counsel Colin Thompson, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson set the jury trial for Jan. 2, 2007 at 9am.

Munson imposed a $25,000 unsecured bond for the defendant’s temporary release.

According to assistant U.S. attorney Craig Moore, on Sept. 7, 2006 Iriarte distributed .15 grams of “ice.”

Moore said that on Sept. 8, 2006 the defendant “intentionally possessed with the intent to distribute and distributed” .20 grams of “ice.”
