Fred Pelisamen is definitely back!

After starring for the CNMI Men’s National Basketball Team during last summer’s 6th Micronesian Games here on Saipan, the 5’9” unstoppable offensive force added to his basketball lore by leading Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense to the championship of the 2nd Annual MDX Coca-Cola Cup Good Sportsmanship Basketball League.

Along the way, Pelisamen collected the most valuable player trophies of both the regular season and finals after averaging a league-high 25 points per game in the eliminations and pouring in 37 markers in SIP’s 87-73 romp of MOVER in the championship last Sunday at a jam-packed Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Pelisamen took home a fourth piece of hardware following his inclusion on the Mythical Five alongside fellow forward Jawn Joyner of RHT, guards Rick Alegre of SIP and Eric Dalangin of MOVER and center and Taj Van Buren of Budweiser.

Other awards handed out immediately after the championship game Sunday were the Best in Free Throw Shooting to RHT’s Jhun Estolas (69.23 percent), Best in 3-Points to Van Buren (3.714 made 3-pointers a game), Best in Rebounds to Bong Malasarte of UFO-Apollo’s (12.143), Best in Assists to Alegre (7.143 assists), Best in Steals to Elmer Esdrelon of SIP (3.714 steals), Best in Blocks to Dalewin Cortez (2.429 blocks), and Rookie of the Year to Ryan Sanciangco of MOVER (24.167 points a game).

SIP coach Boy Garcia and RHT forward Kevin Cequena were also the recipients of special awards as Garcia was hailed Best Coach and Cequena was honored with the Individual Sportsmanship Award.

All four teams that made it to the playoff round of the 2006 edition of the MDX cage league took home trophies, as RHT came away with the pennant championship and 2nd runner-up diadems, Budweiser won the 3rd runner-up trophy, MOVER the 1st runner-up hardware, and SIP, the championship trophy plus a year’s worth of bragging rights for winning it all.

All 15 SIP players—Pelisamen, Alegre, Esdrelon, Edsel Mendoza, James Villacrusis, Bing Marasigan, J.R. Montano, Peter Mendiola, Sam Fernandez, Ed Diaz, Mel Manibusan, brothers George and Darwin Barbo, and Bryan Flores—also were awarded individual trophies.
