The suspect or suspects who broke into the main Duty Free Shoppers Galleria in Garapan over the weekend managed to steal an estimated $40,000 worth of watches, police said yesterday.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said the stolen watches were identified as Chopard, Coaches, and Burberry brands.

Blas said, though, that the police report did not indicate how many watches were stolen.

Blas said no one has been arrested yet.

The spokesman said the DFS’ security office called DPS Saturday at 2:21am about the burglary.

He said preliminary investigation conducted by Patrol Officer Nobert Mettao showed that on duty DFS security personnel discovered during their inspection of the premises that a window on the front side west portion of the building had been broken into.

Blas said the unknown suspect(s) entered the establishment and stole expensive watches from the jewelry section.

No other details were given.

Sources said the suspect, who was wearing a bonnet, managed to enter the establishment by breaking the glass window near the main DFS entrance in front of Joeten Hafa Adai building along Beach Road.

Once inside, the suspect shattered the showcase glass containing expensive watches and jewelry.

Saipan Tribune was told that the security alarm did not activate.

Meanwhile, a security alarm company clarified yesterday that DFS has an in-house alarm system.

DFS Saipan president Marian Aldan-Pierce earlier told Saipan Tribune that it is the first time they had been burglarized.

DFS has a 24-hour security service and has a reputation of having the most high-tech surveillance cameras in the CNMI.

The NMI Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $1,000 cash reward to anyone who can provide information that will lead to the arrest of the burglar or burglars.
